Research Report

The goal of this research project was to locate the birth records of the children of Santo Salvatore Petix and Maria Speziale between 1884 and 1900 in the town of Serradifalco, Caltanissetta. A list of the children you submitted was as follows: Concetta Maria, 1884; Concetta, 1887; Pietro, 1892; Rosa, 1894; Carolina, 1897; and Pietro Giuseppe, 1900. Once all of the children were found, the Petix line was to be extended back through marriage records only.

Research began with the birth records of Serradifalco and covered the years 1880 through 1905. These records were found on FHL #1964310 (1879-1898) and #1964311 (1899-1910). The following births for Santo Salvatore Petix and Maria Speziale were found:

The bride was single, 18 years old and a seamstress born and residing in Serradifalco. She was a daughter of Pietro Speziale, living in Serradiflaco and Rosa Guarneri, living here. Document 8

The marriages of the parents of both Santo Salvatore and Maria Speziale were searched for prior to their approximate birth years, 1862 for Santo, and 1864 for Maria. The marriage of Maria's parents was found on FHL #1466476 (1859-1865), and the marriage of Santo’s parents was found on FHL #1466475 (1845-1858):

English translations of the birth, marriage and death forms are enclosed.

Women used their maiden names throughout their lives.

Italian naming patterns result in the firstborn son and daughter being named for the father's parents, while the second son and daughter are named for the parents of the mother. However, if one of the children with an important name dies, the next child born of that sex is given that name. There are exceptions to these rules, but they are unusual in Sicily.

Complete citations for all sources and translations are included on the attached family group sheets.

Suggestions for further research include searching on back in time to the start of civil records in 1820 and then church records to 1695.

A copy of this report will be sent with accompanying documents, translations, and family group sheets by first class mail tomorrow.

Basic research project paid in full.

Thank you for entrusting me with your family research. I hope to do more research for you in the future.
