San Pietro Clarenza (Catania Province) is 12 km from Catania, alt. 463 m, on the southern slopes of Etna, area 6.4 sq km. Its population is just over 4,800, post-code 95030, tel. 095. Economy: agriculture, hand embroidery.

This town derives its name from the Clarenza family who first owned it. In 1646, it became the property of Giovanni Andrea, Duke of Massa, then of Antonio Reitano (who became Prince of the town), and of Francesco Pietrasanta.

Of interest are the oldest homes which are long low buildings of black lava stone with some whitewash around the doors and windows.

On November 25 is the Festa of Santa Caterina.

Churches (Catania Diocese) include the following:
Santa Caterina Verg. e Mart. (Chiesa Madre)

My latest book on CD is titled Sicily - A Reference for Researchers and is now available. With a file for each town (plus many other files), it relates the history of Sicily as reflected in the photos, records and festivals of its towns. It contains over 2500 text and photo files and can be ordered at CD order.
